An overview of appropriate body services

Does a school have to use an Appropriate Body?

If you are employing an ECT, you need to select an Appropriate Body to work with. When an ECT is employed, the Appropriate Body must be notified to ensure that it is a suitable post and that support processes are in place for the ECT(s). The Appropriate Body will primarily communicate with the school’s named Induction Tutor, but all ECTs are given a named contact from the Appropriate Body for independent support and advice.

How can Inspiration Teaching School Hub help?

As a team, we have delivered a well-renowned SCITT for several years, we deliver NPQs to a high standard and we have been running an ECT programme since its inception in 2021. This experience has helped us understand the needs of ECTs, mentors and induction tutors. As a hub, we are heavily involved in the development of new ECT programmes, working with a range of lead providers. Members of our team also sit on national advisory boards for the ECF and Appropriate Body services. We will draw on this expertise to offer a professional, supportive and friendly service.

What is an Appropriate Body?

Appropriate Bodies provide schools with support for the induction of Early Career Teachers (ECTs). Since September 2021, schools have had to adopt the Early Career Framework (ECF) when employing ECTs. Schools need to work with an Appropriate Body (AB) to quality assure their induction.

There are two primary functions of the Appropriate Body:

- To quality assure each school’s assessments of ECTs against the teacher standards

- To check that ECTs are receiving a programme of support and training based on the Early Career Framework

Who are my local Appropriate Bodies and do I have a choice of provider?

As of September 2023, Teaching School Hubs will be the main provider of AB services, which were previously offered by Local Authorities and national providers, such as the National Teacher Accreditation (NTA). If you are a school in the Breckland, South Norfolk, East Suffolk or Great Yarmouth areas, your Appropriate Body is Inspiration Teaching School Hub. Whilst you can choose other providers, DfE advice is to use your local Appropriate Body to support your school. Local Authorities and Teaching School Hubs are working closely together to make the transition of AB services as smooth and painless as possible.
