An overview of appropriate body services

Do schools have to use the same Teaching School Hub for AB services and ECT training?

No. Although there are a number of benefits of doing so and many schools will choose to do this for efficiency, it is not a requirement for schools to use the same organisation for both services. The roles of training provider and appropriate body are separate, and schools can receive these services from different organisations if they wish to. For example, if a school is satisfied with their current training provider, they can still access AB services from a different TSH AB or vice versa.

Do schools need to register their ECTs with an appropriate body?

All schools that offer induction are required to register their ECTs with an Appropriate Body. An ECT needs to be registered with an appropriate body to start their induction period.

How is the appropriate body service different from the Early Career Training Programme (ECTP)?

The Early Career Training Programme (ECTP) is a professional development programme that provides training for early career teachers and their mentors. The appropriate body monitors the induction of early career teachers including statutory entitlements, support and assessment. As the appropriate body, we’re responsible for ensuring that your teachers are regularly and fairly assessed against the Teachers’ Standards.

What is an appropriate body?

Appropriate bodies monitor the induction of Early Career Teachers (ECTs). They monitor ECT entitlements, check that ECTs have access to training and support and ensure that schools complete fair and regular assessment of their progress.

Who are my local Appropriate Bodies and do I have a choice of provider?

In September 2023, Teaching School Hubs became the main provider of AB services, which were previously offered by Local Authorities and some national providers. If you are a school in the Breckland, South Norfolk, East Suffolk or Great Yarmouth areas, your Appropriate Body is Inspiration Teaching School Hub. Whilst you can choose other providers, DfE advice is to use your local Appropriate Body to support your school.
